Unofficial But Important Holidays In August
We are all familiar with Labour Day, Halloween, Valentine's Day, and Easter, but did you know there are over a thousand other commemorative days each year? From National Hugging Day to National Pound Cake Day, there is a strange unofficial holiday for nearly every day of the year. If you need an excuse to celebrate this month, read on to learn about five odd but amusing holidays in August, and how Room 2046 can help you commemorate these unusual occasions.
August 2nd: Ice Cream Sandwich Day
The origins of this unofficial holiday are unclear, but August 2nd has been named as the formal day to celebrate ice cream sandwiches. These delicious summer desserts are popular around the world, with countries such as Iran, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Vietnam each having their own version of an ice cream sandwich. This day may seem pointless, but it is an excellent excuse to treat yourself to something sweet! Room 2046 carries two ice cream cookbooks, Big Gay Ice Cream and Lomelino's Ice Cream, which both include homemade ice cream sandwich recipes for you to try out!
August 2nd: Colouring Book Day
August 2nd seems to be a particularly special day, as it is also Colouring Book Day. Colouring books were first established in the United States in the late 1800's, and have been commonly used to entertain and educate children ever since. Adult colouring books have recently become popular as well, due to their use as a stress management technique. Room 2046 offers a selection of stylish colouring materials, including metallic coloured pencils, coloured pencils in a glass jar, and a crayon set in the shape of Bavarian gnomes.
August 4th: International Beer Day
International Beer Day was created by a group of friends in California in 2007 as a way to bring friends and strangers together and show appreciation for the art of beer making. It is celebrated on the first Friday of August, falling on August 4th of this year. Beer is thought to be one of the world's oldest beverages, and has been drunk by many cultures around the world and throughout history. Room 2046 has what you need to celebrate this boozy holiday – Sempli beer glasses to hold your favourite brew and a beer-themed thank you card.
August 14th: Afternoon Tea Week
Afternoon Tea Week, beginning on August 14th, is a week-long celebration dedicated to the British tradition of afternoon tea. Afternoon tea has been a part of English life since it originated amongst the wealthy social classes in the 1840’s. Afternoon tea is often enjoyed in a fancy hotel, but can also be easily planned at home. Pick up some Sloane teas from Room 2046, make some finger sandwiches and scones, and host your own afternoon tea for your friends and family. Make sure to read our blog post on the health benefits of tea to learn how Sloane teas can improve your wellness.
August 25th: Kiss and Make Up Day
August 25th is Kiss and Make Up Day, an occasion that encourages people to let go of resentment, grudges, and anger in order to reconcile with people they are estranged from. If there is anyone in your life you want to mend bridges with, pick up a Lucky Horse Press Bulldog Sorry Card from Room 2046. After all, no one can stay angry for long while staring at an adorable puppy. While you're at it, throw in one of our cocktail candles (or two) for good measure.
