Mid-Century modern furniture blog post from Room 2046 cafe shop studio Toronto Canada

The mid-century modern movement encompassed a style of architecture, furniture, and graphic design that dominated the middle of the 20th century. Mid-century modern design is characterized by clean lines, sleek curves, geometric shapes, and homes with open floor plans and large windows. Furniture from this period remains popular today due to its timelessness and perpetually modern quality. Perfectly exemplifying mid-century modern furniture, the Eames and Tolix Marais chairs have become synonymous with this design movement. These styles are still sought after today due to their iconic look and influential history.

Eames chairs were designed by Charles and Ray Eames, an American couple who made significant contribution to the mid-century modern movement. They created pieces for the Herman Miller furniture company and worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, film, and fine art. One of their most well-known designs is the Eames Rocking Chair, which won first prize in MoMA's International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design in 1948. It became commercially available in 1950, and is now widely recognized as a classic in the history of modern furniture design.

Xavier Pauchard, the creater of Tolix, was born in 1880 in Le Morvan, France. Pauchard came from a family of zinc roofers, which lead him to discover that sheet metal could be protected from rusting by being dipped in molten zinc. He set up a factory making steel household items, including the Tolix Marais series. The Tolix chair exploded with popularity, becoming a staple in cafés, offices, homes, and even hospitals. This chair is now part of collection in MoMa in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Vitra design collection in Weil am Rhein in Germany.

Room 2046 is currently selling a number of mid-century modern furniture pieces, including Eames rockers and Tolix chairs. Although they are replicas, they still represent an influential time in design history. Don't be afraid to add a retro touch to your home decor – this iconic style is sure to stand the test of time.
