Room 2046 Namesake Continues to Inspire
A frequently asked question in Room 2046 is the origin of the shop/café/studio's name. Although we joke about there always being two thousand and forty-six items in the store, when in fact it is a reference to the works of Wong Kar-wai. The Chinese art house director is known for his visuals and the number 2046 is a recurring theme in his films.
Youtuber Alessio Marinacci created an homage to directors Wong Kar-wai and Barry Jenkins after noticing the subtle reference in the 2017 Oscar Best Picture "Moonlight" (2016). Below is his video compares and contrasts scenes from the Oscar winner against a variety of WKW's visual stylings.
The Wong Kar-wai movies featured in this clip are: "Days of Being Wild" (1990), "In the Mood for Love" (2000), "Happy Together" (1997) Jenkins's "Moonlight" (2016).
Our studio also draws inspiration from Wong Kar-wai and other fine cinematic directors (Godard, particularly, whose works informed Kar-Wai's own directing style).
